FAQs

General

Stikki.me is a free online service that allows users to post virtual notes (or "stikkis") online which are attached to real-world locations. Stikkis can be private or shared with friends or the world at large. When you log in to Stikki, you can see nearby stikkis that other people have left around you.
Stikki uses the geolocation functions built into all modern browsers and mobile devices to determine the user's location and return nearby stikkis. We do not display or share this information with anyone. (See below.)
Not yet, but there will be soon. In the meantime, Stikki's web interface has been tested to work on Android and iOS devices (such as the iPhone and iPad).

Technical

There will be very soon -- a lovely open API full of magic and wonder and JSON. We're trying to sort out using oAuth 2.0 as the authentication, and it's very irritating. We'll announce it when we go live with it.

Geolocation

In terms of hardware, geolocation is supported by any device that has either an active wifi connection or a GPS receiver. (This includes almost all modern laptops and smartphones.) In terms of software, geolocation is natively supported by all modern browsers with the exception of Internet Explorer, which only utilizes geolocation natively beginning with version 9. (For a complete recent list of compatible browsers, look here.)
Yes -- users who either don't have wifi/GPS or don't wish to give Stikki access to their location can still use Stikki, but the user experience will be extremely diminished.

Auugh! Sigh. Yeah, that happens sometimes. Sorry about that! We're trying to figure out why -- we're not sure if it's a bug in our code or some problem further down the geolocation chain. (Geolocation in non-GPS devices is enabled via some kind of Google voodoo that has to do with triangulating wifi hotspots or something like that.)

Do us a favor and file a bug report, so we know what your browser/platform and problem are. It'll help us figure out how to fix this.

Privacy

No. Your location is never displayed, only the location of the stikkis you post. Stikkis can be posted to any geographic location, not just where the user is located.

No. Emphatically no. While Stikki uses your location to retrieve nearby stikkis and autopopulate the form for adding stikkis, your location is never stored by Stikki.

Anonymous locative data is shared with our advertisers, but this data is never linked to your own account or to any identifying information about you.

If you make that stikki public, absolutely. For this reason, we strongly recommend never posting a stikki that's attached to the location of your home or any other location you wouldn't want the entire world to know about (your office, for example). We can't stop you from doing it, but it's probably not a great idea. Remember, a stikki doesn't have to be posted from the place you actually are, and your actual location isn't stored in the stikki when you post it -- just the location you decided to place it in.

if you do accidentally post a stikki to a sensitive location, you can delete it, and probably should.

Content

Anything you like, with a few exceptions:

  • Threatening or violent or creepy speech (if you have to ask what counts as "creepy" speech, you're probably the one being creepy)
  • Hate speech
  • Spam (defined here, broadly, as commercial content not related to the location where it's posted)
  • Anything that could get us in trouble with the DMCA (like putting copyrighted material up)
  • Legally pornographic or obscene material

Commercial content (such as information about a business or coupon offers) is generally acceptable within reason. We'll put it this way: if you'd be annoyed to get it in your email inbox, you probably shouldn't post it to Stikki.

A user can flag any stikki as spam or objectionable material and we will review it. Ultimately, aside from legal concerns (such as unprotected speech), the decision lies with our team. If we believe the content is unacceptable, we will remove it and warn the user. Continued violations of our acceptable use policy will result in disabling of the violator's account and possibly banning of their IP address or IP address range.

Our definition of "unacceptable" is pretty broad, however, and you'll have to be pretty demented to trigger it off.

No, we're not. We have in no way infringed upon your ability to speak or publish whatever you like. We're just not under any legal, moral or ethical obligation to let you do it on our site.

Remember: at the moment, we review every disputed stikki. So if we removed it, we don't think it deserves to be here. And that is our decision to make.

It's our party. Cry if you want to.
